Progressive Conservative Leader James Aylward today released a discussion paper to provoke dialogue on improving programs and services for Island youth. 

“I have been meeting with Island youth and listening to their hopes and frustrations for several months about how we build a brighter future for our province that creates the opportunities that will help retains our young adults. Young people have good ideas and just need a chance to share them and help shape our programs and services for Island youth,” said Aylward.

The discussion paper focuses on a variety of topics and suggestions that have been brought forward by individuals and groups pertaining to young adults on Prince Edward Island, including:

• Improving foundational supports for youth and families, including an independent Child Advocate;
• Strengthened mental health supports that meet the needs of youth;
• Building a competitive edge for our public school and post-secondary education systems through enhanced curriculum and apprenticeship options;
• Opportunities for post-graduation employment and entrepreneurship on Prince Edward Island through targeted incentives and micro grant financing;
• Promoting greater democratic participation through innovations like online voting.    

“Some of the issues raised in the discussion mirror ongoing advocacy from youth and student groups about issues that matter to Island youth. I hope this serves as a starting point for a broader conversation that really empowers Island youth,” noted Aylward.
