Legislation that was passed this fall to provide support through the Workers Compensation Board for workers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) should be proclaimed by government so those in need can access support, says Borden-Kinkora MLA and Opposition Justice and Public Safety Critic Jamie Fox.

“Island workers who are suffering from PTSD injuries in the workplace should be able to get help. That’s why I brought forward Bill 102 and that’s why all parties in the House supported it because it’s the right thing to do. I’m asking that the government proclaim this law into effect so that Island workers can get the help they need,” said Fox.

Bill 102, An Act to Amend the Workers Compensation Act, was introduced during the fall sitting of the Legislature. The bill amended the Workers Compensation Act to allow for coverage of workplace injuries related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The bill was strongly supported by Island first responders and was unanimously passed by the Legislature and received Royal Assent on December 20, 2017. The bill now requires proclamation by Cabinet to come into effect.

“As a former first responder I know how important this law is to our police, firefighters and paramedics who deal with difficult situations on a daily basis. I also know that this law could help other Island workers who may experience trauma in the workplace. That’s why I’m hoping to see this law proclaimed into effect at the earliest opportunity,” said Fox.
