FOOD WASTE PRIVATE MEMBERS BILL TABLED: MYERS

CHARLOTTETOWN— Reducing food waste on Canada’s Food Island is the intent behind a new private member’s bill being proposed by Georgetown-St. Peter’s MLA Steven Myers.

“We are Canada’s Food Island but we don’t really have a policy around food waste and how to reduce it. That’s a gap that needs to be addressed and I’m hopeful that this bill will start a conversation that could result in Prince Edward Island being a national and even international leader,” said Myers.

Bill 103, the Food Waste Awareness and Strategy Act, proposes the development of a strategy that would engage stakeholders throughout the food supply chain to reduce food waste, enhance food security, and compliment the food strategy.

Myers stated that his intention would be to consult with Island primary food producers, retailers and non-governmental organizations.
