King proposes new focus on the first 1000 days of a child’s life

Charlottetown - A new Progressive Conservative government led by Dennis King will put a new focus on strengthening programs that care for the physical, mental and emotional development of children during the critical first 1000 days of a child’s life.

“The first thousand days of a child’s life can shape their future. The First 1000 Days Initiative will promote action and investment to improve nutritional health, development and well-being of mothers and children. Providing this kind of care - nutritional, mental, social and cognitive development - has a ripple effect on the health and prosperity of our families and our Island communities,” said King.

Improving care for nutritional, mental, social and cognitive development will have a ripple effect on the child’s health and the health and prosperity of our families and our Island communities. What I am calling for is a comprehensive focus across government to strengthen the supports that are there now and build on them,” says King.

King noted that proper nutrition, good access to health care and child care, and effective early interventions are key to providing a solid foundation that best position children for success later in life. The First 1000 Days Initiative will identify gaps in existing programming and encourage a collaborative approach across government departments.

“Local access to programs and services is an ongoing concern that I hear from Islanders. These initiatives are a small step towards addressing that concern,” says King.
